TEMPORARY RESIDENCE PERMITS

Cyprus temporary residence permit allows Non-European Union passport holders to extend their stay in Cyprus for more than 3 months. Under this permit, a person is allowed to live in Cyprus as a visitor (without the right to work). Also, his family members, spouse, and children (under 18 years old), can get the temporary residence permit as dependants. It is important to note that the holder cannot stay out of Cyprus for more than three months continuously as the permit would be cancelled automatically. Also it is valid for one year and can be renewed annually. In order to be eligible for this type of permit, the applicant mainly needs to show adequate income from abroad to cover living expenses while residing in Cyprus (estimated about € 25,000 – € 30,000 for a three-member family) and either rented or bought a house or apartment in Cyprus.

PERMANENT RESIDENCE PERMIT (FAST-TRACK)

By investing in residential real estate in Cyprus, non-EU citizens have the option to attain EU residency within two months through the Cyprus Permanent Residency on a fast track basis application, known as a Regulation 6 (2). EU residency through programmes such as this are becoming an attractive option for non-EU citizens who want a permanent link with the EU.

The most common way to obtain this is type of permit is to purchase of a house or apartment from a development company (first sale), at a value of at least €300,000 (plus VAT).   The following criteria must also be satisfied:

• Maintain secured annual income originating from abroad of at least €30,000. In order to add a dependent to the application for permanent residency (such as wife and children), the minimum amount of the secured annual income is increased by €5,000. The income may be from overseas employment, pensions, interest on fixed deposits or rents from abroad.
• An initial payment of at least €200,000 (excluding VAT) for the residential property to be purchased, is required to have been paid by the date of filing of the application;
• A clean criminal record certificate issued by the applicant’s country of origin;
• A statement/affidavit confirming that the applicant has no intention to work or be engaged in any form of business in Cyprus;
• The applicant must visit Cyprus at least once every two years;
• It is important to keep in mind that holders of a permanent residency permit are not permitted to work in Cyprus.
